Details will be announced at a public event in Eyre Square, where people will be given copies of the cultural programme, following what organisers describe as a launch spectacle.

Chair of Galway 2020, Arthur Lappin and Minister for Culture, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Josepha Madigan will launch the programme – a major landmark on the road to the European Capital of Culture. Printed copies of the programme will be distributed by Galway 2020’s dedicated team of Wave Maker volunteers. The programme offers a glimpse into the array of far-reaching projects that make up the year ahead.

In 2020, the City will create, critique, connect, marvel and investigate. They will remember the past and imagine a future together. The programme is a celebration of this magical coastal county, as multidimensional as the range of creativity that lives here. Whatever your interest – food, music, dance, literature, visual art, spectacle, poetry, theatre, sport – there will most certainly be something for you. For all of us, the launch offers a taste of the collective excitement to come.

Brief speeches will give way to a joyful and exciting experience on the day, embodying the spirit of Galway 2020. Speaking ahead of the launch, Creative Director of Galway 2020 Helen Marriage says; “It’s incredibly exciting to be at this stage when we can start to tell everyone about what is planned for the year. And this is just the beginning, a taste of what’s to come during a year in which Galway will be Ireland’s mirror to the world. Let’s hope the weather is kind to us!”

There are multiple ways to access the programme. An online version will be available to view and download on the Galway 2020 website. A printed copy will also be delivered to every household in the city, county and islands in early October. For those curious to learn more, there will be an opportunity to converse with the team in the 2020 office during an open house event for Culture Night, Friday 20 September from 6pm to 9pm.

Galway 2020 is looking forward to sharing the programme with everyone and revealing what people can expect across Galway City and County throughout 2020.
